St. Charles Lwanga Catholic Church, Ntinda Kampala (St. Charles Lwanga, Ntinda) is a Parish of St. Charles Lwanga, Ntinda, which is a parish in the metropolitan Archdiocese of Kampala in the Republic of Uganda; Kampala being the capital city of Uganda.
It was named after and consecrated to St. Charles Lwanga, the leader and one of the twenty two Catholic Martyrs of Uganda who were canonized Saints by Pope Paul VI on 18th October 1964 in Rome. Charles Lwanga was martyred on the orders of King Mwanga of Buganda for his faith. He met his death by being roasted in a slow burning fire on 3rd June 1886 at a place called Namugongo in Uganda, which today is a site of an annual pilgrimage for Christians from all over the world. The sub-parish is situated along the way on which the Martyrs, (all tied up with ropes) were made to walk on their way to a fiery martyrdom at Namugongo which is about 5miles from St. Charles Lwanga Ntinda, Sub-Parish Church. The Sub-Parish has a Catholic population of about 3500 Christians.
The Sub-Parish was established in the 1980′s at the request of the few Christians then residing in Ntinda, a suburb, then at the periphery of Kampala. The Christians bought a piece of land and put up a small church building which has continued to serve as place of worship. The Catholic Community in Ntinda has however now more than quadrupled. The Christians of the Sub-parish decided in 2008 to put up a new and bigger church to accommodate the more than 300/400 people who now attend any one Mass at St. Charles Lwanga every Sunday.
Building of the said new church commenced in April 2009 after all necessary municipal and other statutory permissions and approvals were obtained. Funds amounting to about U.S $ 600,000.00 will be required to build and complete the new church. Funds that have enabled construction to progress to the present stage (see the report of the building committee on this site) have been raised largely from the Christians of St Charles Lwanga, with some assistance from people without the Sub-Parish of goodwill. A lot of work still awaits us, and the challenge to raise the necessary funds remains critical! We are however determined to rise up to the challenge and build for the Lord a befitting place of worship that gives Him honor and glory. We will be very grateful to receive any donation towards this noble cause. A task becomes lighter when it is shared by many!
